Observations from the center stripe: Winter Olympics edition

YOU KNOW the Winter Olympics are near when speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno surfaces. Where does he hibernate between Olympiads?…NBC, RED BULL, Under Armour and P&G had a lot riding on skier Lindsey Vonn, who had to withdraw because of a knee injury. With a nine-hour time difference and 1,500 hours of programming to fill, NBC is praying for a new star to emerge quickly…NBC’S PROGRAMMERS know hard-core sports fans (mainly men) will watch anything, including curling, but casual fans (mainly women) will only sit still for specific events. That’s why you’ll see too much figure skating during prime time…NOT FOR everybody:  The National Ski Areas Association reports that 54 percent of skiers have incomes of $100,000 or more, while the number of skiers who earn less in declining…AMERICA’S TWO-PERSON bobsledders will be driving Beemers at Sochi. Their sleds were designed by BMW…ON THE other hand, the American team’s uniforms were actually made in the USA. In the last Summer games, the uniforms were imported from China.
