Bear River has to win its last two Pioneer Valley League games–starting tonight at Placer–to have a shot at post-season play and extend its streak of non-losing seasons to 30.
The Bruins find themselves in a win-or-else situation after losing to Colfax by two touchdowns last week, dropping their record to 3-5, 1-2 in PVL play. BR should get the first of those two wins tonight against the Hillmen in what others will consider an upset.
In Pioneer Valley League games this week, my projections show:
–Bear River over Placer by 4 points;
–Colfax over Center by 1.5 points;
–Lincoln over Foothill by 10.5 points.
SIERRA FOOTHILL LEAGUE
Nevada Union will conclude another dismay season in the SFL tonight when the Miners travel to Oak Ridge for what figures to be another thrashing. That will mean 23 straight league losses; the last team the Miners beat in league play, Roseville in 2012, was demoted to a less competitive league.
Nevada Union is stuck in the SFL for a couple of more years, but that doesn’t mean coach Dennis Houlihan is going to stick around. He made it clear last week that the Miners can’t win against this competition; don’t be surprised if he resigns in the near future.
In Sierra Foothill League games, my projections show:
–Oak Ridge over Nevada Union by 23 points;
–Woodcreek over Granite Bay by 6 points;
–Folsom over Rocklin by 29.5 points.
Our picks went 2-1 last week, getting us closer to .500 season. Hopefully, we can get over the hump with the four picks listed below:
–Texas Tech (+9) over TCU;
–Baylor (-3.5) over Texas;
–Washington State (-13) over Oregon State;
–Old Dominion (-4.5) over UTEP.
I have a new rule for the rest of the season: No more bets on the 49ers, who blew a two-touchdown lead against a lousy Tampa Bay team to lose what should have been a toss-up game by 17 points. The team won’t get any better until it fires GM Trent Baalke and replaces him with somebody who actually knows what he’s doing.
This week’s picks are:
–Falcons (-3) over the Packers;
–Lions (+2.5) over the Texans;
–Browns (+3) over the Jets;
–Raiders (P) over the Bucs;
–Chargers (+4.5) over the Broncos.
High School: We went 3-2 last week to bring the season record to 16-6, a 73 percent win rate. We’ll have to close strong to match our record of three years ago.
College: Things got better as we went 2-1 last week, bringing the season record to 2-4, 33 per cent. Hopefully, we can get over .500 this week.
Pro: Thanks to a dismal performance by the 49ers, we went 2-3 to bring the season record to 4-4-1. You can do that well flipping a coin.
NOTE: The point spreads for the college and pro games are the consensus lines from VegasInsider.com at 11 a.m. this morning. The high school numbers are my projections of the margin of victory.
