Jeff “Podunk” Pelline says I’m wrong when I include Uber, a San Francisco company, in Silicon Valley. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about that:
“As more high-tech companies were established across the Santa Clara Valley, and then north toward the Bay Area’s two other major cities, San Francisco and Oakland, the ‘Silicon Valley’ name eventually came to refer to all high-tech businesses in the region. The term is now generally used as a synecdoche for the American high-technology economic sector.”
The entry also includes a map that includes the entire Bay Area in the big valley. More can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley
I knew Don Hoefler, the reporter for Electronic News who first used the term in the media and helped popularize it. I even got him a cup of coffee once. LOL, as they say.
Yeah….he’s called for your termination (from employment only I think) for “insulting” Judith Lowry. Frankly if there was an Olympic medal for pearl clutching Pelline would be that sports Michael Phelps!
He’s been trying to fire me for 3.5 years. I’ll start worrying if he ever says anything nice about me.
Oh, no! Erika Smith, an editorial writer and columnist for The Sacramento Bee, refers to Twitter twice–twice!–as a “Silicon Valley company” without mentioning it’s headquartered in San Francisco in her column today. The editorial page staff of The Bee apparently doesn’t know the correct definition of Silicon Valley, the one used by “people in the know.” Maybe Jeffie can educate them.
I’m sure Erika is somewhere on his “To Fire” list! If for nothing else other than working for the organization that has a printing plant that now prints “The Union”.
Ever vigilant is your neighbor!

On no, part 11! The BBC also thinks Uber is in Silicon Valley, and the San Francisco Chronicle, of all papers, refers to Mark Pincus of Zynga (that’s in San Francisco) as a “Silicon Valley billionaire” http://www.sfgate.com/technology/businessinsider/article/Two-Silicon-Valley-billionaires-want-to-reinvent-11265747.php
Apparently “those in the know” are small in number. More educational work for Jeffie.
It is sweet to be right. LOL!
